Crude audio, coarse cuts and unwanted switches of the camera – rarely any filmmaker adventures himself to the public at this early state of production, requesting feedback.

But this is exactly what Florian Thalhofer is doing: he is requesting active assistance for his new Korsakow-project “the Greek and the Money” (working title). The rough-cut interview-sequences are now visible on vimeo as raw-material. View them, evaluate and comment them!

All ratings and comments will be analysed and have an impact on which scenes will make it into the film. Therefore every single rating and comment is helpful.

Together with his Greek girlfriend, the German documentary-filmmaker travelled through Greece in order to talk to people about cause and effect of the crisis. They conducted about 30 hours with interviews. In a first step this material has been reduced to an amount of about 4,5 hours. This raw-material is now available as 203 short video-clips, rough-cut and subtitled on vimeo.

This will lead to a Korsakow-film of about 70 minutes length, premiere will be in Athens in June 2012. Besides the Korsakow-film a Korsakow-Show and a Korsakow-Installation will arise.

28th of February, 8 pm at the Korsakow-Institute: Interested people are invited to participate, think along and assist in the making of the most recent Korsakow-project.

Together with the filmmaker, the guests spend three diverting hours viewing the raw material – in the midst of the project’s process of realization. Fourteen people are present. Germans and Greeks with different backgrounds. The rough-cut interview-sequences are successively projected, the individual ratings and comments are noted down by the audience after every single clip.

Diving into the debate, the guests evaluate what’s being said according to criteria such as content or personal aspects. Different people like different things for different reasons, at times the debate is intense. But this is desired: It’s an experiment. Thalhofer opens his raw material to an interested crowd, asking for opinions, perceptions, is thrilled about the combined brain-power, the inspiring discussion and talking heads.

The day after this first successful presentation the results are appraised. Thalhofer is analyzing the various ratings and comments that his guests have noted down. We are all happy about the participants’ enthusiasm and their help in making this Korsakow-project – already thinking of a soonish second rough-cut preview.

Greece is in crisis, Europe is in crisis

How do people feel in Greece? How do they experience the crisis? How did it happen and how to live with it? What needs to be learned – or can the crisis even be a chance?

Together with his Greek girlfriend, Florian Thalhofer traveled through Greece, conducting many interviews. Based on this material, a complex and multilayered project is arising. You can participate in this early stage of production and take influence on which scenes will become part of the documentary. Vote your favorite scenes into this Korsakow-film.

Man sieht es in den Nachrichten, man hört es im Radio, man liest es in der Zeitung: Griechenland hat kein Geld, Griechenland steckt in der Krise. Und mit den Griechen steckt ganz Europa in der Krise, denn geht Griechenland pleite, droht die Pleite Portugals, Spaniens, Italiens. Der Euro ist bedroht, die Idee des geeinten Europas ist bedroht, es droht ein Unheil apokalyptischen Ausmaßes.

Oder?

Wie sehen es die Menschen in Griechenland? Wie erleben sie die Krise? Wie kam es zu dieser Krise und wie lebt es sich damit? Wie erleben die Griechen die Deutschen und umgekehrt? Was kann man lernen – oder kann die Krise gar Chance sein?

Seit einigen Tagen ist Florian Thalhofer in Griechenland unterwegs. Für das Goethe-Institut Athen realisiert er ein neues Korsakow-Projekt zum Thema “Die Griechen und das Geld”. Zusammen mit seiner Partnerin, der Griechin Elissavet Aggou, reist er durch das krisengebeutelte Land und spricht mit den Menschen, sammelt persönliche Eindrücke, Meinungen und Stimmungen aus der griechischen Bevölkerung.

13terShop is a webdoc about Roland Center, a shopping mall in Bremen. Roland Center was one of the first shopping malls built in Germany in 1972, which is by coincidence the same year, the two authors (Florian Thalhofer and Kolja Mensing) were born. Thalhofer and Mensing lived for 31 days in the shopping mall and portrayed the regular visitors of the shopping-mall, as well as the people running it.

13terShop was originally published in 2007 on the internet and as a book/DVD. The updated version provides improved video-quality and the possibility to few this Korsakow™-film full screen.

Im Rahmen der Reihe “Die Zukunft des Dokumentarfilms” freuen wir uns, zum ersten Mal den linearen Film und die Web-Documentary in einer gemeinsamen vom Regisseur präsentierten unterhaltsamen Show zu zeigen. Sie werden Gelegenheit haben, den Reiz beider Erzählformen, deren Unterschiede und die Herausforderungen und Chancen der linearen und non-linearen Erzählweise im direkten Vergleich zu erleben. Und anschließend mit einigen der Macher des Projekts zu diskutieren.

Die Crossmedia Veranstaltung ist eine einzigartige Gelegenheit, die neue Form des intermedialen und web-basierten dokumentarischen Arbeitens kennenzulernen. Die Crossmedia-Doc-Show PLANET GALATA von Florian Thalhofer, zeigt zuerst den linearen Dokumentarfilm, um dann im Anschluss die Zuschauer im Kino in die Präsentation des interaktiven Projekts einzubinden. Mit Laserpointern können aus dem Publikum die interaktiven Elemente angesteuert werden. Auf diese Weise werden der Film und das Web-Projekt in ihren Möglichkeiten Inhalte zu transportieren direkt miteinander verglichen.
Das folgende Podiumsgespräch wird von Roderich Fabian (Bayern 2-Zündfunk) moderiert. Autor Florian Thalhofer, Produzent Stefan Kloos und Redakteurin Kathrin Brinkmann veranschaulichen die Entwicklung von Crossmedia-Projekten und diskutieren die Perspektiven solcher intermedialer Dokumentationen. Themenwahl, Umsetzungsmöglichkeiten crossmedialer Zusammenarbeit und Finanzierungsstrategien werden besprochen und Fragen des Publikums beantwortet.

Berlinale is over. (I did not go there.) I was one of three nominated for best documentary at the German Web Video Award in Essen (see blog-entry below (if you speak German)). The honorary jury award went to mopeten.de for a 17minute video about a trip of 8 guys on motorbikes („the idea was convincing: 1000 miles in 24 hours“) the audience-award to the short film „Freddy“ about a friendly and funny guy that masters life in a wheelchair (cool description of how the film was shot, which camera and software used on director’s Roman Michel’s blog). Only 7sons did not win a price. Therefore I was picked up at the airport in Istanbul in a black limousine and I had the pleasure to get squeezed into the car with the winners of Berlinale First Feature Award. „On the Ice“ – director Andrew MacLean showed me a photo of him and Wim Wenders on his mobile phone. That was cool! They were driven to their hotel from where I had to walk to my friend’s house: I have the pleasure to stay with Berke Bas – my co-director of Planet Galata. And, as winning producer of „On the Ice“ Cara Marcous said: „There is nothing better than staying at a home.“ – Right!

Korsakow, from film cuts & software codes

Herr Kloos von der Firma Kloos und Co Medien GmbH sagt, dass es das Beste ist, was ich je gemacht habe. Naja, mal schauen, ob Planet Galata die [kleine welt] toppen kann. Die kleine Welt. Die ist von 1997 und hat eine Auflösung von 640×480 Pixeln. Das war mal cool. Jetzt ist 1920 × 1080 Pixel cool, und Planet Galata ist 1920 x 1080 Pixel!

Die [kleine welt] war ja quasi der Ursprung von allem. In der [kleine welt] geht es darum, wie es ist, in der kleinen Stadt groß zu werden. Planet Galata handelt davon, wie es ist, nach Istanbul zu kommen, genauer gesagt auf die Galata-Brücke in Istanbul. Und die ist auch irgendwie eine kleine Stadt, oder zumindest ein Dorf, ein kleines Dorf in einer sehr, sehr grossen Stadt.

Die [kleine welt] ist mittlerweile schon ein richtiger Dinosaurier. Ein Neue-Medien-Dinosaurier aus dem Jahr 1997. Trotzdem schafft es die [kleine welt] immer noch Aufmerksamkeit zu erregen. Nicht in Schwandorf (das ist da, wo die [kleine welt] spielt), sondern z.B. in Lindau am Bodensee, da ist sie derzeit in einer Ausstellung zu sehen. In Kanada wird in Kürze ein Interview in einem Magazin mit mir über die [kleine welt] erschienen. Und am Donnerstag werde ich sie in Berlin vorstellen. Da, wo die Veranstaltung stattfinden wird, gibt es auch Bier. So wurde mir das gesagt.

Planet Galata ist zwar jetzt fertig, aber noch nicht veröffentlicht. Das ist jetzt auch wieder so ein Unterschied. Und die [kleine welt] habe ich ja quasi alleine gebastelt. Bei Planet Galata haben ganz viele Leute mitgemacht, die wissen was sie tun. “Professionelle Leute”, würde der König der Brücke dazu sagen. (Der König der Brücke, das ist eine der Figuren, die auf dem Planeten Galata leben.)
Planet Galata habe ich zusammen mit Berke Bas aus Istanbul gemacht, mit Gunther Kreis aus Berlin, Ilja Pollach aus Köln, Jim Avignon aus New York und noch vielen andere mehr.
Ich habe seit Mitte Februar fast nonstop daran gearbeitet, und jetzt bin ich ein wenig müde.
Aber, um es mit den Worten des Königs der Brücke zu sagen:

“Es macht glücklich, das Resultat einer Arbeit zu sehen, in die man viel investiert hat. Ich bin zufrieden, ich bin gut gelaunt in diesem Moment.”
